Plaisance (2018)
SOCIAL / PUBLIC
Bringing together social dancing and the public space of the urban park, Plaisance draws on traditions of social dance vernaculars, choreographic play against architectural structure, and dance as a source of joy and belonging. Plaisance is set in Lafayette Park, with Detroit based dancers: Baily Allshouse, Marianne Brass, Ras Mikey Courtney, Amy Cova, Shelby Murphy, Ta'Rajee Omar and her son Rahim, and Christopher Woolfolk. Employing old, new, and imagined versions of the hustle, a popular line dance in Detroit, with its rhythmic patterns and focus on personal style, this video participates with a larger performance project, Hustle in the Park, which brings together a group of performers who seek a world-making machine through dancing as collective joy.
