SET OF SEVEN

Set of Seven (2016)

Performance, Installation

Duration: 15 minute cycles

A Set of Seven is a new dance installation choreographed by Biba Bell for Detroit Homecoming's Max Fisher event, September 15, 2016. Involving seven dancers, the movement score and phrasing will consist of a rolling, wave-like pattern that travels the length of the recital hall, conceived in conjunction with artists Cuppetelli and Mendoza's Nervous Structure Field, activating and highlighting its modes of spatial and movement-based sensory production.

The title, A Set of Seven, refers to the tendencies of ocean waves to settle into sets of seven, a condition intimately experienced by surfers waiting for their ideal swell. Like the impulse to drop in to catch the wave and travel the length of the break, each dancer will have a score that can be activated at any time.

The phrasing and timing of A Set of Seven will follow this odd numbered rhythm, creating a sense of intrigue and suspense. The combination of flow and irresolution through this phrasing will provide a dynamic tension, best experienced through the physicality of the dance as it progresses through time.
